3xxx series aluminum tread plate (also referred to as aluminum chequer plate or aluminum pattern plate) uses manganese as the primary alloying element, producing a material with higher strength than pure aluminum while maintaining excellent corrosion resistance and workability. The raised pattern is formed during the rolling process, creating an anti-slip surface suitable for walking surfaces and structural applications. Both 3003 and 3105 alloys are available, with 3105 providing slightly higher strength due to increased magnesium content.

Temper selection depends on application requirements: O temper provides maximum formability for formed parts, while H22 through H26 tempers offer increasing strength levels for structural flooring applications. H114 temper is specifically produced for tread plate applications, providing optimized pattern definition and flatness characteristics. Pattern height ranges from 0.8-1.5mm above the base material, depending on base thickness and pattern type.
Five standard pattern configurations are available, each engineered for specific slip resistance requirements and loading conditions. All patterns are embossed into the material during final rolling passes, ensuring pattern adhesion to the base material without delamination.
The five bar pattern (also called willow pattern) is the most widely specified tread plate pattern, featuring five parallel raised bars arranged at approximately 45 degrees to the sheet length. Small five bar pattern has bar spacing of 22mm, while large five bar uses 32mm spacing. This pattern provides a coefficient of friction of 0.6-0.8 under dry conditions when tested per ASTM D1894, making it suitable for general purpose walkways, stair treads, and vehicle flooring.
Three bar pattern features three wider raised bars per pattern repeat, providing increased load distribution capacity for heavy equipment traffic. This pattern is specified for industrial platform flooring, truck trailer floors, and loading ramps where point loading from forklift trucks or heavy equipment occurs. The wider bar profile reduces localized stress concentrations compared to five bar patterns.
Diamond pattern (also called pointer pattern) features individual diamond-shaped raised elements, providing multi-directional slip resistance for applications where traffic moves in multiple directions. Hammered pattern produces a uniform textured appearance with random indentations, used primarily for decorative applications requiring moderate slip resistance, such as wall panels, trim, and architectural features.
3003 aluminum tread plate provides ultimate tensile strength ranging from 130-180 MPa depending on temper, with yield strength of 110-165 MPa and elongation of 5-30% in 50mm gauge length. 3105 alloy provides ultimate tensile strength of 140-200 MPa with yield strength of 125-185 MPa. Both alloys exhibit excellent atmospheric corrosion resistance without additional coating, though mill finish, anodized, or painted surfaces are available for specific applications.
Fabrication guidelines for industrial users: shearing operations require 5-8% clearance per side based on material thickness. Bending operations should be performed with the pattern surface on the outside of the bend to prevent pattern cracking, using a minimum inside bend radius of 2× base thickness for H24 temper. The raised pattern side is installed facing up to provide the slip-resistant walking surface. For structural applications where the plate is bonded to a subfloor, the smooth side is placed against the subfloor with the pattern side exposed to traffic.
